Guascor Energy gas engines for
Al Amal Petroleum Co. in Egypt

Benefits

  • Replaced diesel generators with two containerized flare gas gen-sets for high annual fuel savings
  • Estimated 50 percent reduction in interval maintenance costs versus diesel gen-set
  • Reduced emissions by 50 percent

The Opportunity

Al Amal Petroleum Co. onshore production facility is located at Ras El-Deb gas field in the Egyptian Red Sea.
This exploration and production (E&P) site is located 350 km (217 miles) southeast of Cairo and 100 km (62 miles) north of Hurghada. It serves as a central pumping station (CPS) that is connected with a 16-inch (406 mm) pipeline with  Egyptian General Petroleum Corporation (EGPC) gas processing plant and the concession areas at southwest Gebel El-Zeit.

This installation is also connected to Al Amal’s offshore rigs A&B with different size pipelines. Al Amal Petroleum Co. officials approached Guascor Energy, because company officials wanted to convert flare gas into usable fuel.

The Solution

Part of the total production of 70 MMSCFD* of a #55 methane flare gas is being used to fuel the generating sets 0,2 MMSCFD). Part of that gas which was formerly vented into the atmosphere is now used to generate 1,5 MWe of cleaner power to feed shipping pumps and batteries; self consumption for the installation; basic energy demand; and other needs of the gas plant facilities. This eliminates the use of expensive, diesel-based power generation.

A complete engineering study was performed by ENPPI (as EPC contractor) and the installation, commissioning and start-up was successfully completed by the Guascor Energy business’ local representative, Proserve – Professional Engineering Services, based in Egypt.

The field is currently operated by EGDC, an independent exploration and production company within the PICO group.

Guascor Energy allowed for two identical 40-foot containerized G-48SL LCR generators, each rated at 780 kWe to generate electricity in harsh environmental conditions of approximately 48 degrees C (118 degrees Fahrenheit). Emissions are kept at bay ([NOx] = 140 ppm and [CO] = 50 ppm, respectively) using selective catalytic reduction technology that is allocated to each of the generator overheads. This reduces emissions by 70%. In parallel, it provides an advantageous
return on investment by replacing diesel with natural gas fuel.
