Biomass energy facility of animal origin in Turkey
Biomass refers to any organic matter derived from plants or animals that can be used as a source of energy or for various industrial processes. This organic matter can include materials such as wood, crop residues, agricultural waste, animal manure, and even algae.
This concept of biomass has gained attention as a renewable energy source because it can help reduce greenhouse gas emissions, as long as it is managed sustainably. When biomass is used for energy production, the carbon dioxide (CO2) released during combustion or conversion is roughly equivalent to the CO2 absorbed by the plants during their growth.
This means that the net carbon emissions from biomass energy are relatively low compared to fossil fuels, making it a potentially more environmentally friendly energy source.
The Afyon Bes farm was built in 2016 and has an area of 175.000 sqm. It produces yearly a waste amount of: 310.250 ton chicken manure plus 36.500 ton cow manure.
Guascor Energy provided seven biogas G-56HM gensets of 1204 kWe each with a total electrical capacity of 8.4 MWe. The heat generated by the engines is directly used to produce the biogas that subsequently feeds the engines as fuel.
The electrical power generated by the engines is used as the main power source of the whole plant and surplus energy is sold to the grid.
The remaining waste –after being used for electricity generation- is used as an organic fertilizer for farming (over 3.000 TN/year once the waste material is dried).
Afyon BES farm biogas plant is the first highest – hybrid – capacity – licensed- biogas plant in Türkiye. Where PV solar integration capacity is 8.4MW
